The Joseph Banks Building was built in 1985 under the Directorship of E A Bell and is one of Kew’s most contemporary buildings.
The building is named after Sir Joseph Banks, who became the friend of George III, with whom he shared an interest in agriculture and rural affairs, from 1773 he acted as unofficial director of the Royal Gardens at Kew. Under his supervision Kew became one of the foremost botanical gardens in the world.
