Learn about the exciting Pop Brixton community project which has transformed an area of derelict land into one of the most entrepreneurial spaces in London.
The story behind Pop Brixton
Pop Brixton is a special community project with Lambeth Council to support local independent businesses. A 1,425-square-metre space with shipping containers and communal areas, this quirky London event venue is where all of Brixton’s most innovative enterprises come together to work and sell.
Pop Brixton today
Today, Pop Brixton is home to dozens of independent businesses ranging from street food traders to restaurants, designers and social enterprises, many of which are ambitious start-ups.
Giving entrepreneurial start-ups a head start
The project provides specially discounted rents to help independent businesses build awareness and get their feet off the ground. Thanks to a Community Investment Scheme run on behalf of the Brixton Pound, every member invests a minimum of one hour per week into local activities such as mentoring, fundraising and training. Plus, for community events, each space is available to use free of charge for at least a quarter of the time, to minimise costs.
Food and drink at Pop Brixton
If you’re hungry, sample some of the delicious Indian and British fusion cuisine at Baba G’s, or order a perfectly crisp stone-baked pizza at Made of Dough. Alternatively, visit Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen for some brilliant West African cuisine, or Duck Duck Goose for succulent roasted duck, goose or pork.
Events
Come to Pop Brixton on Mondays for a relaxing massage (prices vary), or try some free Hatha Flow Yoga on Tuesdays. Kids will love the free after-school ‘Little Chef’s School’, too, where they’ll have the chance to make fresh pasta and pastries, under the expert eyes of Sicilian chefs Pietro and Stephania from the renowned Brixton restaurant Franzina Trattoria.
That’s not all: every first and third Monday of the month, Pop Brixton holds free Laughter Yoga, as well as a free Kids Kreate art club on Saturdays, and Beast Mode HIIT resistance training every Tuesday for only £7. The space also holds weekly film screenings, debates, performances, talks and plenty more, all of which you can check here.
Pop Farm
You’ll find a beautiful urban farm called Pop Farm, which grows a wide range of fragrant herbs and vegetables for local businesses and residents. This is the place to immerse yourself in nature, right in the heart of south London.
Times
Pop Brixton will be held at 53 Brixton Station Road daily from 9am to 11pm. No reservations are necessary – just turn up and join in the fun.
How to get to Pop Brixton
The easiest way to get here is to take the tube to Brixton station, which is served by the Victoria line and has fast links to the West End (Oxford Circus), and the City via a quick change at Stockwell for the Northern Line.
